No help for Mr. Big

 No help for Mr. Big

Among the biggest reasons Castleton returned to Florida instead of turning pro was being sold on Golden’s vision for the program. Castleton also loved his 37-year-old coach’s passion, which mirrored his own hyper-aggressive playing style and vocal energy on the court.

Golden, forced to go portal transfer shopping to rebuild the roster, provided Castleton with what he believed to be an ample supporting cast.

“With the pieces we’re going to get, I think we’re going to be good,” Castleton told the Times-Union in April. “I wouldn’t have come back if I didn’t think we were going to be good.”

The problem is, the Gators are only good on one end of the floor. Until ‘Bama ran them out of Coleman Coliseum with nine three-pointers in the first half for a 52-23 halftime lead, Florida has been in every conference game because its defense keeps them in contention for 40 minutes.

Golden has made UF better than the sum of its parts. He just doesn’t have enough firepower to be anything more than a middle-of-the-pack SEC team.

Too many times, the Gators’ offensive attack goes into long dry spells and they have to rely on a Colin-bail-us-out strategy. Once again, he was a lone wolf in the ‘Bama blowout, where the Crimson Tide duo of top scorers Brandon Miller (24 points) and Mark Sears (19 points) overwhelmed UF with a barrage of three-pointers.
